Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) is on a downward trend across GSM Operators around the globe. The downward trend is especially steep in growing economies. In the past, number of new subscriber added was enough to counterweigh the effect . In growing economies, now that mobile market is reaching high teledensity (high dissemination), low ARPU are under scrutiny.

 In Europe, America and other high GDP per capita economies, GSM Operators have started to bundle IP Services (Email, Web Browsing, IM, 802.xx Connectivity, etc) with the regular voice service. It has contributed to sustain APRUs. To use IP Services not only GSM Operators have to deploy GPRS, EDGE equipment in their network, also the subscribers have to have more capable (read expensive, smart) phones – and that is where the challenge lies. In growing economies majority of the phones are less expensive devices designed for voice and SMS services only.
